March 3 Meeting Notes
Our March meeting was well attended and lots of fun.
We began the meeting talking about our upcoming mini Mojo Retreat in Chester, April 5-7. Lis-el showed us an orgone pyramid which she will be making with anyone who is interested. She has sent around an email regarding costs and food preferences.
We then talked about the Flash & Fire Challenge which is being held through AMCAW. If you join AMCAW, you will receive a tutorial book called Flash & Fire. It has 15 wonderful tutorials for all levels. The challenge is to create a piece inspired by one or more of the tutorials. There are more details on the AMCAW website, amcaw.org. There is no fee to enter and the prizes are incredible.
We had talked about doing a gallery show at a prior meeting. Little Fish Gallery in East Hampton, CT is willing to host a show in October. There would be a Friday night opening and a 2 week run, October 4-13. The gallery charges a 70/30 commission rate and provides some marketing. We will discuss this further. It’s a great opportunity to get your pieces out there.
We had a wonderful show and tell with guest Valerie Bealle, who came with Marcia. She brought beautiful bottles she made with gold embellishments.
Lynn Z. demoed making bangles with polymer clay. She brought her boxes of polymer pieces, scraps and canes to show all the many techniques you can use with polymer. She showed how you create different effects to use with the bangle blanks. She used a brass blank to demo how you pack in the clay and how you can manipulate it to get different looks. It was very inspiring, and as she likes to say “There’s a million things you can do”!!!
We then talked about the retreat and what to bring. Everyone should bring their clay, tools, a work surface, a task light, and any other textures, molds, etc. If you have anything you wish to troubleshoot with the group, bring it. We love to help each other. Our schedule is, as always, not set in stone (pardon the pun). We will be holding a workshop making a crinklized dichroic piece with Lis-el. There is a $50 fee for the workshop and a materials fee of $50. Bevlynn will be showing us how to make a double exposure photopolymer plate. If you have supplies for that, you can bring them. Lis-el will bring her pen plating equipment. I think there was other plans for demos and fun, but I can’t remember!!
Staying over or commuting, plan to arrive at 10 am on Friday, April 5. We will be in the sunroom again.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the retreat.
